India Vs. West Indies, 1st ODI, Oct 21, Sun: Match Preview & Prediction

With West Indians going down meekly to India in the recently concluded two test-match series, the stage is all set for the five-match ODI series, which will be unfolding on October 21, 2018, at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. Given the current form and an undeniable home advantage, the hosts are more likely to dominate the proceedings and end up whitewashing the visitors. However, since cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties and the West Indies are way more adept at the shorter version of cricket, an upset cannot be ruled out.

Pitch and Weather Report:

The venue for the first ODI, Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, is a recently constructed stadium that has thus far hosted a single T20I between India and Australia on October 10, 2017. The pitch held true in that encounter and is expected to do the same this time around as well. If it happens, a run feast is on the cards where bowlers will be taken to the cleaners.

With the temperature in the vicinity of 28° C and humidity levels reaching 65%, the weather is also conducive for the batting. Being a day and night encounter, the dew factor will come into play, especially in the second half of the game. The team winning the toss is more likely to bat first.

Team composition:

India has put up a regular team for the most part with Virat Kohli spearheading the unit and Rohit serving as his deputy. The top order packs a punch with some of the most prolific run scorers in the contemporary cricket, such as Rohit, Shikhar, Kohli and Rahul, while the middle order is also a fine mix of talent and experience featuring Rayudu, Pandey and Dhoni.

The young sensation, Rishabh Pant can also hope to earn his ODI cap but only as a batsman since Dhoni is likely to do the glove work. In the bowling department too, India has relied on tried and tested names like Shami, Umesh, Jadeja, Chahal and Yadav. However, the pace staples, Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah are rested probably for the upcoming Australian tour.

West Indies, on the other hand, has decided to field a fairly inexperienced side, excluding Chris Gayle, Andre Russel and Sunil Narine. However, familiar faces, such as Jason Holder, Marlon Samuels, Pollard and Darren Bravo, will lend some experience and stability to the team in the first ODI and the subsequent contests. West Indies is counting on Oshane Thomas, the young speedster from Jamaica, to pose threat to Indian batting order with his speed and accuracy.
