Transfer Window ended some time ago, but the managers’ choices sometimes affect their clubs for many years. Premier League clubs have invested over 1.5 billion euros in strengthening their teams. While creating the ranking below, we focused on the aspect of the potential value of every player for their team. So, we picked six supposedly the most important and exciting transfers of last summer.
1. Rodri (Atlético Madrid -> Manchester City for 70 million euros)
We put Rodri in the first place in our ranking. The valuable defensive midfielder was a missing element in the team led by Pep Guardiola last season. The Spanish coach did not have many good class players who could appear in such a position. It caused “The Citizens” had a problem with undertaking effective competition on several fronts in the second part of the season.
In the last summer transfer window, this problem was solved by bringing Rodri from Atlético Madrid. The Spaniard did not enjoy playing on Wanda Metropolitano for too long, because he had come to the club only a year ago, but his time spent under the watchful eye of Diego Simeone was enough to be reached by one of the most successful coaches in the history of football.
2. Nicolas Pépé (Lille OSC -> Arsenal for 80 million euros)
Thanks to his excellent performances on French football fields, leading European teams monitored him. In the end, Arsenal unexpectedly won the fight for his favours. Supporters of the “Gunners” promise themselves a lot after bringing a representative of Cote d’Ivoire. They count on that he will follow in the footsteps of Eden Hazard, who once for a record sum left the ranks of “Les Dogues” for performances in Chelsea and quickly became the leader of “The Blues”.
The local rival of “The Blues” certainly would not despise winning an identical achievement thanks to Nicolas Pépé. Together with Pierre-Emerick Aubameynag and Alexandre Lacazette, he can create a capable offensive trio in Arsenal. Of course, if Unai Emery sees a place for the whole threes in the original composition of the team he runs.
3. Tanguy Ndombele (Olympique Lyon -> Tottenham for 60 million euros
Tottenham has limited its activity on the transfer market for the past several months. But Once started it with a strong blow by contracting the sought-after Tanguya Ndombele. The Frenchman is considered one of the most promising central midfielders on the Old Continent. He has already shown that he can be one of the players in the “Roosters” team who will fill the gap after the leave of Christian Eriksen.
It is worth mentioning that the 22-year-old received better financial offers from other clubs in recent weeks. But he decided to accept the offer of “Roosters” because of the presence of Mauricio Pochettino on the coaching bench.
4. Harry Maguire (Leicester City -> Manchester United for 87 million euros)
Before the start of the previous season, he had already been an object of both Manchester clubs’ goal. At that time, however, he did not decide to leave the ranks of Leicester City. Such a step was determined by another of the leading figures in the ranks of the “Foxes” – Riyad Mahrez. This summer, the defender could stand on his own and count on the understanding of his situation by the team authorities from King Power Stadium.
Nevertheless, they wanted to take advantage of Manchester United’s unfavourable position. How? They made representatives pay a record amount that has not been paid for any defender so far. “Red Devils”, however, were determined in the fight for Maguire’s signature. All because he is to become the leader of the defensive formation team from Old Trafford.
5. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Crystal Palace -> Manchester United for 55 million euros)
He filled up the second missing element of the Red Devils defence. Representatives of the Old Trafford team also had to put much effort (and money) to convince Crystal Palace to sell England’s youth player. Finally, they spent a considerable sum of money on acquiring the 21-year-old player.
For now, we can say that the value of Wan-Bissaki and Maguire has been significantly overestimated. However, over time, Manchester United should get greater benefit from their performances. It will translate into an improvement in the results achieved by the team led by Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
6. João Cancelo (Juventus -> Manchester City for 65 million euros)
The representatives of the Premier League champion acquired two football stars for a considerable place. But who else has so much money to spend? João Cancelo was contracted as a valuable competitor for Kyle Walker to fight for a place in the first line-up.
The previous rival of the Englishman, Danilo, did not fulfil such role well. Guardiola decided to sell him to Juventus and bring João Cancelo in exchange. Is it the right choice? Although João Cancelo has not played much so far, he always maintains the standards.
We listed top 6 transfers in Premier League that took place in the last summer window. No one of the players above has performed surprisingly well so far, but we are just at the beginning of the season. Let’s wait other weeks before we make a judgement.
